AIE New Melbourne Campus

David Giles - Head of School, Melbourne

29 August 03

While Melbourne enjoys its reputation as one of the most liveable cities in the world, it is also the centre of video game development in Australia. AIE Melbourne campus is uniquely located within the Atari Building in Queens Road and shares premises with Atari Melbourne House - a cutting edge games developer who has produced over 160 games during its 23 years of operation. In fact, all of the Victorian games companies are within a narrow radius creating an accessible and exciting environment for AIE students. AIE Melbourne campus is strongly affiliated with industry and educational events and is currently the primary sponsor of the annual Twitch Game Day Festival.

AIE Melbourne campus benefits from the Victorian Government’s ongoing commitment to the local games industry and the creation of a highly skilled workforce for this burgeoning industry. The AIE is therefore ideally placed to be the premier site for state of the art games training and education.

The view from the Melbourne campus

AIE Melbourne campus is headed by David Giles who has over nine years experience in the video games industry. David began work at Beam Software, Australia's oldest and largest video games company as a senior producer. Beam was taken over by Infogrames/ATARI in 1999 and David continued to work as both the Studio Manager and Director of Development until the middle of 2003. David has also worked as a university lecturer and continues to have close ties with tertiary institutions.

Students at AIE Melbourne campus benefit from being part of a small, caring environment but can still be part of the student ‘scene’. AIE Melbourne campus is surrounded by countless cafes, cinemas, galleries entertainment and sporting facilities, universities and other tertiary institutions. AIE Melbourne campus has door stop access to Melbourne’s public transport system enabling easy access to the city centre and the outer suburbs. Melbourne is a truly cosmopolitan and modern city fringed with stunning botanical gardens, lakes and beaches. Students can experience a truly enriching time while studying at AIE Melbourne campus.
